Brody was in the hardware store, buying stain for his deck when he ran into Steve Gordon, who was buying paint.

“Hi, Steve. Time for some home improvement?” Brody greeted him.

Steve gave a guilty start. “Uh, yeah.”

Brody’s real estate radar started going off. If the Gordons were doing home improvement, they could very well be ready to move. He and Steve had talked about it a couple of times over beer at The Drunken Sailor while Steve’s wife was line dancing. The couple longed for waterfront but they’d been through some hard times financially over the last few years and waterfront hadn’t been in the cards. Were they feeling more flush? If so, it was news to Brody. And why was Steve looking like he’d just been caught doing something illicit?

“You thinking of selling your place?” Brody asked.

Steve’s cheeks turned ruddy. “Well, uh, Tamara was talking with this, uh, woman.”

Oh, no. “Lucy Holmes?”

Steve nodded. “She came over the other night and looked at the house.”

The very same house that Brody had found for them ten years earlier.

“She suggested some things we could do to it. Said she could get top dollar. We’ve been eyeing one over on Ocean View.”

Brody knew exactly what house he was talking about. Taylor had the listing. It needed some work but the bones were good and the location was great.

“It’s a nice house,” he said. But if Lucy had told the Gordons they’d get enough for their house to be able to buy that one, she’d lied. Or else she was delusional. “And so is yours. You guys have kept it in good condition, and fixing up the bathroom was a great idea. But...”

“Here comes the but,” Steve said with a frown.

“I don’t think you can get enough money from your place that you can buy that one.”

“Lucy seemed to think we could.”

Lucy was definitely delusional. “She’s new to town and doesn’t really know the market.”

It was shitty to diss the competition, but in this instance Brody wasn’t dissing, merely telling the truth. Lucy Holmes would get their hopes up, sell their place for less than they needed and they’d be no better off than they were and would have to give up on their dream house. They’d wind up settling for less because there wasn’t anything currently on the market that would give them as much for their money as what they already had.

Now Steve was looking glum, and Brody felt like a giant raincloud that had just found a parade to ruin. But it was the truth, and it didn’t do any good to get people’s hopes up. Still, that house on Ocean View had been on the market for a couple of months and the owners, who were getting divorced, might have reached the point where they’d be willing to come down in price. Then, if Brody kicked in half of his commission...

It wasn’t something he normally did, but he’d known the Gordons a long time. In addition to some financial problems, they’d also endured the agony of losing a child to drugs.
